Gunnison Gorge NCA

Gunnison Gorge NCA is made up of 62,844 acres of wilderness and river. It is a beautiful area located between Delta, Montrose, and Gunnison. The NCA stands for National Conservation Area.

You can hike, camp, boat, ride horses, hunt, fish, and backpack in this incredible area. This is a park that is probably best enjoyed by people in good shape with older children. Small children would not have much fun on the trails or in the river. It is beautiful, but most of the activities are not small-child friendly.

There are specific regulations that visitors must follow. These can be found on their web site.

There are no cushy accommodations here. Campers rough it at this park. The beauty is rugged and so is the river.

The Gunnison Gorge River provides rafters, kayakers and whitewater canoeists with a great experience each year. Boater regulations and river information are also found on the above web site.

There are five hiking trails for you to enjoy. The Chukar trail is 1.1 miles long and has a moderate amount of difficulty. This trail has a high amount of foot and horse traffic.

The Bobcat trail is 1.5 miles long and is rated difficult. This one is not for horses as there is a steep descent down the face of a rock for the last half mile.

The Duncan trail is 1.5 miles and is also difficult and not for horses because of the steepness of the last half mile.

The Ute trail is 4.5 miles and is moderately difficult.

The North Fork to Smith Fork trail is 4 miles long and is a fairly easy trail near the river.
