The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is a very popular place for kayaking and for whitewater rafting. The Arkansas River goes on for 150 miles, sometimes calm and other times wild and raging. It is a lot of fun to raft. The rapids here are classed at II, III, IV, and V, so there is something for everyone. If you enjoy water, whitewater rafting is something you should try. It is a great deal of fun. A little scary, but loads of fun! Hundreds of visitors are in the water each day experiencing the rapids.
You may have seen whitewater rafting on one of your favorite TV shows and now it is time to try it for real. It is a blast!
Visitors can fish and camp, hike, bike, pan for gold, ride horses,climb rocks, cross-country ski, go snowmobiling, and go showshoeing. It is a fun place to be.
Fishing can be done from a raft or from the banks of the river.
Expect to see a lot of wildlife in the area including birds, ducks, owls, elk, mule deer, goats, and bighorn sheep.
The visitor center is located in Salida, Colorado on 307 W. Sackett Avenue.
