From Colorado Springs, take I-25 south to Route 160 and then head west until you come to this pretty town. Close by the Great Sand Dunes National Park, the incredible scenery will astound you. There are mountains, flat lands, bodies of water, sand dunes, and beautiful wildlife, including cranes in the spring. There is actually a crane festival each March there.
Also in March, there is an art festival, featuring the talents of regional artists for visitors to enjoy.
Other things to do include hiking, fishing, boating, birding, hunting, playing golf, and riding four-wheelers.
There are free summer concerts in Cole Park. A farmer's market sells fresh produce every Saturday during the summer in Oscar's parking lot downtown.
Take a ride on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, which goes each day from Alamosa to the towns of LaVeta, Monte Vista, and Antonito. It is known as the scenic line of the world. If you ride, you will see gorgeous mountain peaks, lots of wildlife, cliffs, canyons, and small towns along the way. This is a fun way to do some sightseeing without having to drive. Your kids will love riding the train.
