Bents Old Fort

Bent's Old Fort or Bents Old Fort is an old fur trading post turned into a national park. On the old Santa Fe trail, there is an adobe post that was built back in the 1840s to trade furs. This building has been reconstructed and today you can relive those days through guided tours and demonstrations of how it was back then.

People wear clothing from the 1840s and reenact daily life. This is a great learning opportunity for home schoolers to learn about history.

Throughout the year, they have various programs where they reenact things like caravan rides, living history training, and fur trading so check their calendar and plan your visit around some of these activities. Some of these activities are for kids so they can learn firsthand.

The park is 70 miles from Pueblo and 110 miles from Colorado Springs. You can get there from U.S. Highway 50 and Highway 194. If you are coming from La Junta, Colorado on U.S. Highway 50, take Highway 109 north 1 mile to Highway 194, then east on Highway 194 six miles to the fort. If you are coming from Las Animas, Colorado, on U.S. Highway 50, take Highway 194 west 13 miles.
