Canyons of the Ancients National Monument is in southwestern Colorado and has over 6,000 archaeological digs. Native American dwellings are found throughout the park.
Around 1500 BC, people called Basketmakers moved into the area and became farmers, planting corn. They made beautiful baskets. By 750 AD, they were putting up pueblos, made pottery, and started farming other crops. By 1300 AD, they left the area.
When you get to the park, visit the Anasazi Heritage Center to get information about the park. There is no camping in this park.
Hiking, hunting, mountain biking, and horseback riding are enjoyed here.
Be prepared to see wildlife like mountain lions, peregrine falcons, bald eagles, deer, elk, coyotes, foxes, wild turkeys, ducks, rabbits, doves, snakes, scorpions, and lizards. Have your camera ready for photos.
Stay on existing roads and trails. Wear good walking shoes. Have some bug spray to keep gnats off of you.
