Colorado Springs fitness is a great for 2009. According to Men's Fitness magazine, Colorado Springs is the second fittest city in the United States this year! They were beat out only by Salt Lake City, Utah.
The population is 380,000? and only 19% are obese. The national average is 25.19%. Why? It seems that the folks living in Colorado Springs get a lot more exercise than the average person in other cities around the country. And why is that?
Well, number one is the exceptional scenic beauty that its citizens can look at while they are outdoors. Pikes Peak, the other mountains, the beautiful trees, flowers, green grass, and perfect skies are much more desirable to look at than the television set or video games.
There is more time for adults to exercise because the average commute to work and back home is 45% less than other cities. This helps a great deal. There are 210 city parks and that is a lot. Men, women, boys, and girls go outside and play, walk, hike, run, and swim a lot. They love to get out in the wide, open spaces and run and play tag, catch, frisbee, and basketball.
More parks and other wide open spaces equals more exercise which
equals thinner, healthier people. 33% more people here participate in sports than in other cities. Why would anyone want to be cooped up inside when they can be outdoors in such a picturesque place. Just wait until you see this beautiful city up close and personal!
According to Men's Fitness magazine, people living in Colorado Springs are 100% more likely to take a hike than residents of other cities in their study. Wow! 100%! Why? Again, the beauty of God's creation in this spectacular city is the reason. The air is cool, dry, fresh, and clean. You feel comfortable when you are outside having fun. I used to take my three small children out each day to play in the yard, in the park near our home, and in many other places.
Once my oldest son started kindergarten, we walked him to school each morning and walked back over in the afternoon to pick him up on clear days and in snowstorms. There was no school bus because we lived too close to the school, not quite a mile away. I bought a double stroller and put my one year old and my two year old in it and I pushed them all over the city. That gave me even more exercise on my quest for Colorado Springs fitness after giving birth to my daughter there. My two little ones loved the stroller ride.
On snowy days, I bundled them up and covered them with blankets in the stroller. The temperature was never too cold and the snow was never too bad for it. Besides, we only had one car and my husband used it each day to get to work and school so I had
no choice. Turns out, it was great exercise for me.
Springs residents are 77% more likely to bike for fitness. Mountain biking and running, not to mention skiing and
snowshoeing, are very popular here as well.
Usually the weather is so lovely that many people walk to work if they live close enough. When I did work downtown several years later, I would go out and walk during lunch. The sidewalks downtown were always crowded with others on their lunch breaks, walking for their health. Colorado Springs fitness is extremely important to most of its citizens.
