Van Briggle Pottery

The Van Briggle Pottery studio is right next to the Ghost Town Museum, located at 600 South 21st Street. From I-25, take Exit 141 and head west on Highway 24 for 1.5 miles and turn left on 21st street and then take an immediate right.

This is the oldest continually working pottery studio in the United States. It was established in 1899 by Artus and Anne Van Briggle. Artus was a fine painter and potter. He developed a type of art nouveau in clay and his pots and pieces became world-famous and sought after very quickly. They still are today.

We got to go in for free and take a tour. Potters work right out in the open so you can watch them shaping clay into beautiful pieces. They fire and also glaze the pieces as you watch. The kilns are in the back and bake pieces all day long.

Of course, there are many beautiful and expensive pieces for you to buy. I wanted to buy a lot of them. If you enjoy pottery, make sure that you stop in to pick up a few gorgeous pieces for your home.  You will have a hard time making a decision.

The Mason Jar

The Mason Jar is my favorite because I think both of their locations have the best-tasting food for the price and a pleasant family atmosphere.

When we first moved to Colorado Springs to attend Bible College, our new friends at church and school advised us to try The Mason Jar, so we did. We were glad we did and were frequent flyers.

They have two locations, one in Old Town at the corner of 30th Street and Colorado Avenue and the other, which we went to the most because it was closer to where we lived, is at 5905 Corporate Center Drive.

Even if you have a big party, you don't need to worry about reservations. They are big and will try to accommodate you quickly and cheerfully. If you have little ones, they are happy to help you get them comfortable, too. This was a big plus for us since we had two babies and a toddler when we got there.

Now for the most important part--the food. Delicious! Every item that we tried was superb. My personal favorite dish is the boneless pork chop plate and my second favorite is the lemon shrimp. My husband, who is a Texas native, loves the chicken-fried steak and said it was like his mother used to make when he was a boy.

They serve several chicken dishes, a few beef dishes, one pork dish, and several seafood dishes. I have tried them all and they are wonderful. They have burgers and sandwiches as well. The desserts are fabulous, especially the chocolate walnut brownie.

My children loved to eat there. The family dinners we ate there were affordable on our small budget.

More of the best Colorado Springs restaurants will be added soon for you to try.

Seven Falls Colorado Springs

Seven Falls in Colorado Springs is gorgeous during the day and even more spectacular at night.

Seven different waterfalls cascade down the rock wall for 181 feet. At night, the falls are lit up and the water against the mountains is breathtaking.

There is a one mile drive through a narrow canyon. At its narrowest point, it is 42 feet across. The falls are best viewed from a platform called Eagle Nest. An elevator will take you up to the platform.

You will oooh and aaah at the natural beauty during the day. At night, the light adds to the beauty of the water and the mountains.

Take your camera and get as many shots as you can of the water against the mountain. Up at the top is an incredible view of the city.

To get there, take I-25 to Exit 141 and travel west on U.S. 24. Turn south on 21st Street. After about three miles, turn west on Cheyenne Blvd. and turn left again on S. Cheyenne Canyon Road.

Admission during the day is $9 for adults and $5.50 for children from the ages of 6 to 15. Nighttime admission is $10.50 for adults and $6.50 for children. It is free for children 5 and under. Hours vary.

Royal Gorge Bridge

The Royal Gorge Bridge is a one of a kind bridge that is 1053 feet high. There is also a park with 21 rides on it for family fun!

Walking or driving across this very high bridge is nothing short of awesome! The view is spectacular. If you are afraid of heights, you probably won't enjoy it, but it is really cool. This is the highest suspension bridge in the entire world and is one quarter of a mile long.

The bridge was built back in 1929! It is 1260 feet long, 18 feet wide, and it was designed to support over two million pounds. Wow! It cost $350,000 to build back in 1929, the year that the Great Depression began, just to give you some perspective. In today's money that is around $20 million.

Interestingly, the walkway on the bridge is a popular wedding venue. The bride, groom, and minister go on the walkway while the guests watch the wedding from a platform. If you are thinking of a destination wedding, this could be the way to go.
Get additional information on creating the perfect Christian wedding.

There are some great rides in the park for the whole family to enjoy. There are several shows for your enjoyment and a petting zoo that the kids will love.

In addition to the bridge and the park, the world's longest single-span Aerial Tram and the steepest Incline Railway on the planet are also here and are included in the cost of admission.
They are open 365 days a year, even on holidays. Admission for children from ages four through eleven is $19. Ages 12 and up pay $24. Children under four are free. The bridge opens daily at 7am and is open until dusk.

Royal Gorge Bridge and Park is located in Canon City at 4218 County Road 3A. Their phone numbers are 719-275-7507 or 1-888-333-5597.

To get to Canon City from Colorado Springs, take Highway 115 south to Highway 50 and head west. Then turn left on County Road 3A until you come to the gorge.

Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center

Do you love dinosaurs? I do. If so, you will love Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center located in Woodland Park.

Woodland Park is a small town about 18 miles northwest of Colorado Springs. The center is loaded with cool dinosaurs. I could spend hours there each time I visit.

Your young children will love the Children's Learning Center. Guess what they get to touch and feel? Give up? Dinosaur number two...yes, dinosaur pooh! Can you believe that? The kids (and probably most of the parents) will think this is the coolest thing, and it is!

The Children's Learning Center also has a dinosaur dig site to keep children interested. This is a hands-on place for kids so you do not have to constantly tell the kids not to touch. They will learn and practice their digging skills. Maybe one of your children is a future paleontologist.

The dinosaur exhibits are so neat and, yes, there is a T-Rex. They have a good collection of not-so-common dinosaurs so you will learn a lot of new dinosaur names when you visit.

There is a theater with 20 seats that shows various types of dinosaur, geology, and paleontology videos throughout the day. You will learn all sorts of fun and interesting facts and see how the dinosaurs looked and moved when they roamed our Earth.

There is a large gift shop with all sorts of cool dinosaur items for you to buy. They have some of the best souvenirs.

The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center is located at 201 S. Fairview St. in Woodlawn Park, Colorado. It is easy to get to from Colorado Springs. If you are on I-25, take exit 141, which is Cimarron Street. At the ramp light, turn onto West Cimarron Street which is also known as Route 24 West. Stay on this street for 18 miles. The Dinosaur Center will be on your left at the third traffic light which is South Fairview Street.

Admission prices for all that you get to see and do are very reasonable. Adults pay $11.50, senior citizens who are 65 or older pay $10.50. Children from ages 5 through 12 pay $7.50 and children 4 and under get in free.

The Center is open 7 days a week, year round from 9am to 6pm Monday through Saturday and from 10am to 5pm on Sundays. They are closed on New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

North Pole Colorado, Santa's Workshop

We discovered a Christmas paradise at the base of Pikes Peak--the North Pole Colorado, Santa's workshop.

This is a wonderful place to visit if you love Christmas, especially if you have young children. But even if you don't have kids and you love Christmas, this is the place for you.

There are animals, rides, shows, Christmas ornament and candy shops, wonderful decorations, Christmas music, Santa's workshop toys, and Santa himself! I cannot tell you how much fun we had here with our children. They loved it and so did I!

Pictured below are Andrew, Matthew, and Tiffany with Santa at the North Pole. They had a blast visiting Santa just a few days before Christmas that year.

Your children can sit down and have a talk with Santa. This Santa has a real beard and acts like he cares about your child. He is not a mall Santa, but a man who will talk to your child and actually listen to what the child wants for Christmas. It is a great experience. You can snap photos or you can have Santa's  Elf take a photo for you that you will have to pay for. This is a great keepsake of a very special visit.

North Pole Colorado is on 26 acres of pure magic. Because it is on the base of Pikes Peak, it can be chilly. Sometimes, rain just comes up all of a sudden. It is a good idea to have a jacket in the car for everyone so if it does rain while you are there, you can run out and get it and continue your visit without being cold and wet. (Been there, done that the first time we visited!)

They have some places to eat burgers, fries, mostly fast food fare, but it is stuff kids enjoy. There is also an ice cream parlor.

The 60 foot Ferris wheel is a lot of fun and so are the other rides. Your kids can ride a replica of a space shuttle, swinging back and forth. Your whole family will have fun touring the park in the train. The animals will delight your children. How often have you seen a real reindeer up close and personal?

Pictured above, my son, Andrew, assisting the magician at the North Pole magic show. The kids loved it.

The magic shows are very good. There is also musical entertainment.

When we were there, we bought Christmas ornaments for our tree that we still put on the tree each year from Santa's workshop.

Admission is $16 a person for everyone, ages 2 through 59. Children under the age of two get in free. Seniors who are 60 or more get in for $5.95, a real bargain.

North Pole Colorado is open on Christmas Eve, weather permitting. It is closed from Christmas Day until the middle of May when it reopens.
In the photo below, my husband, David and my oldest son, Andrew are by the icy North Pole in the middle of Santa's village.

The Money Museum

Do you like money? Who doesn't, right? Did you know there is a Money Museum in Colorado Springs? While you are here, make sure you stop by.

The study of money is called numismatics and The American Numismatic Association has opened this museum so you can learn more what jingles in your pocket.

This is an interesting learning adventure, particularly for coin collectors and for homeschooling students. What a great way for your kids to learn about money firsthand. They can learn about paper money, experimental coins, and gold coins. They will see rare coins and paper money and learn about the history of money. Learn how coins and dollars are formed and printed. Learn about the types of materials used in making various types of money.

Children will gain a greater understanding of the value of money. Perhaps this museum will start them on a lifelong hobby of coin collecting.

Would you believe they have an 1804 dollar? Would you believe we used to issue $3 bills? How about seeing a 1913 Liberty nickel? How would you like to see some money printed in 1866 without a series number? The museum has all of this and more. Some of their exhibits are permanent and others are visiting so there is always something new going on, even if you have visited this fascinating place before.

Plan to spend at least a couple of hours looking and learning about the subject that is near and dear to us all in these economically hard times. Parents, don't rush your kids; allow them to explore and ask questions. Use your vacation as a learning experience for them. You, also, will learn a lot of things that you did not know about.

The Money Museum is on the campus of Colorado College, right by the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. They are open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:30am until 5pm, and admission is $5 per person, and $4 per person for senior citizens, students and military personnel with ID. The address is 818 North Cascade Avenue.

Manitou Springs Colorado

Manitou Springs Colorado is four miles west of Colorado Springs and sits at the base of Pikes Peak. There are nine mineral springs in this quaint community with high concentrations of sodium bicarbonate and other healthy minerals. The water is good for dry skin and for upset stomachs.
The word "manitou" is a Native American term for "spirit" and this town was considered sacred by several groups of Native Americans. They thought this because of the beauty of the wooded box canyon against Pikes Peak, along with the healing springs of water.

The railroad came to this town in 1881 and soon after, it started to grow and thrive.

It really is a gorgeous town with a lot of great places to stay and fine dining as well. There are historic motels, hotels, and some lovely bed and breakfasts for you to stay at. There is so much for your family to see and explore.

The shopping is great for antiques, jewelry, gifts, and souvenirs. You will have an enjoyable time getting acquainted with this town. Try some of the free spring water available to everyone to drink. Right now, studies are going on to see if the springs can be restored for soaking in, but it is not allowed at this time. I know, it is disappointing, but you can taste the waters.

Manitou Cliff Dwellings

The Manitou Cliff Dwellings are more than 700 years old and are very cool to see. They were built by the Anasazi people and are not replicas. These are the real deal.

From about 1200 B.C. to around 1300 A.D., native Americans who lived in Colorado and the surrounding area roamed the area and built places to live. That is how these cliff dwellings came to be.

They are at the bottom of beautiful Pikes Peak and are well-preserved. Touch and explore as there are no signs forbidding you to do so. Cool, huh? The kids will love exploring these dwellings and most adults do as well.

Learn about the Anasazi, who they were, how they lived, and where they went. This is truly an educational and fun way to spend the day. If you homeschool your children, this will be a great field trip that will make history come alive for them.

There is also an outdoor oven for you to see, along with a nature preserve with the kinds of plants that the Anasazi used for food and medicine. This is a very interesting place to visit and you will probably spend hours here checking everything out.

In the summer, you can eat at the snack bar that is open from June through August.

Also, from June through August, Native Americans perform traditional dances and ceremonies for you in traditional costumes and they are quite amazing. You will truly enjoy their performance. Next to the dwellings is the Anasazi museum and a Southwestern gift shop so you can buy souvenirs to take home with you. The building was built in the style of the Pueblo Indians who are descendants of the Anasazi people.

The Manitou Cliff Dwellings, located in Manitou Springs, Colorado are open everyday of the year except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The hours vary depending on the time of year.  Tickets for ages 12 and over are $9.50, for kids seven through eleven, $7.50 and ages six and under get in free.

Go five miles West of I-25 on Hwy. 24 . The address is 10 Cliff Dwellings Road and you can call them at 719-685-5242 or
800-354-9971.

Idaho Springs Colorado

Idaho Springs Colorado is the birthplace of the famous Rocky Mountain Gold Rush. Back in the mid-1800s, gold was discovered here and a mining town quickly grew up around it to serve everyone coming to find their fortune in gold.

Today, there is an authentic nineteenth century town for you to explore and for your comfort, there are hot springs! If you have never experienced hot springs before, be sure to visit and experience them.

Indian Springs Resort Hot Springs is the place to relax and soak on 302 Soda Creek Road. They have pools, private baths, and outdoor jacuzzies. Prices start from $10 per person per hour up to $20 per person per hour.

There are galleries, art museums, and a ghost town for you to enjoy. The town has a gold mine for you to tour and you can even try panning for gold.

You can make this a day trip from Colorado Springs or you can stay in the town. There are plenty of good restaurants for you to choose from as well.

But the real beauty lies in the Colorado Rocky Mountain backdrop to this town. Be sure to drive on the highest paved road of North America, the 28 mile length of Mount Evans Scenic Byway. It goes up 7,000 feet from Idaho Springs up to the summit of Mount Evans. Mount Evans is 14,264 feet above sea level and offers spectacular views. It takes about one hour to go up this highway and another hour to return so allow plenty of time in your planning for the two hour drive plus time to take in the views and take photos.

Idaho Springs Colorado is about 30 miles west of the Denver area on I-70 and is well worth the drive. Golden Gate State Park is nearby with great views of the Continental Divide so be sure and visit there as well.

Hotels In Colorado Springs

There are many hotels in Colorado Springs, spread out all over the city. Colorado Springs gets a lot of tourists because it is such a beautiful city with so many great things to do.

The first time we went to Colorado Springs, my husband called and made reservations with a hotel and wrote down all of the information. We drove to the Springs from El Paso, Texas and by the time we got there, we were ready to get out of the car. My husband pulled his papers out and could not find the paper with his reservation information on it. He thought he remembered the name so he went to a phone booth, looked up what he thought the name was and got an address.

We arrived but there was no reservation. We never did find out where our reservation was, but we checked into the hotel we were at and it was very nice. I do not remember the name of it but it was moderately priced, right in the heart of town, near Old Colorado City.

The next time we went, a little over a year later, we stayed on the outskirts of the city and it was nice as well. Several months later, we moved up to Colorado Springs so my husband could attend Nazarene Bible College. We lived near the brand new airport and the college. Everything there was convenient and when visitors came to see us, we were able to put them up in nice motels on Academy Blvd., which was very close to us, close to good restaurants, and close to shopping and some attractions.

The hotels in Colorado Springs closest to the major attractions cost a little more than those over by the airport and Academy Blvd., on the Southeast side.

Some of the best and least expensive by the airport that I suggest are:

1. The Best Western Airport Inn at 1780 Aeroplaza Drive. They have an indoor pool and a spa.

2. Comfort Inn/Days Inn Airport at 2115 Aerotech Drive. They offer free airport shuttle service, free breakfast, indoor pool and spa.

3. Econo Lodge Airport at 6715 Panamint Ct. They offer an indoor pool, hot tub, and a microwave and coffee pot in the rooms.

4. Radisson Hotel Colorado Springs Airport at 1645 Newport Road. This is a full-service hotel and is a little pricier than the previous listings.

5. Super 8 Airport at 1790 Aeroplaza Drive. They offer continental breakfast and kids 12 and under stay free.

The nicest hotel in Colorado Springs is the beautiful Broadmoor Hotel.

Stay at The Antlers Hilton Colorado Springs.

Glenwood Springs Colorado Lodging

From April 1 through May 20, Glenwood Springs Colorado lodging offers bargain room rates from $59 to $159 a night. They call it the Springs Thaw. Temperatures are in the 50s and 60s in April and May and spring is the perfect time to visit without a lot of crowds. The altitude is 5,700 feet above sea level so it warms up faster here than in most Colorado towns.

There are 1,500 rooms available in the motels, hotels, lodges, cabins, cottages, and bed and breakfast establishments. There are also some ranches, campgrounds, condominiums, and vacation homes where guests can stay.

This city is 160 miles west of Denver, where the Colorado River meets the Roaring Fork River and is gorgeous year round.

During the spring, you can go river rafting, bike, hike, and play golf. Take your family to have fun at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. You can ride the mechanical bull, take a wild west wagon ride, climb a rock wall, and ride on the Iron Mountain Tramway. Your kids will have a blast at this park.

The world's largest natural hot springs pool is located right here in Glenwood Springs so once you are finished with your outdoor adventure, you can plunge in and relax your muscles in the hot springs.

The pool is at Glenwood Hot Springs, along with a 107 room lodge, water slides, miniature golf, an athletic club, and a spa.

The summer, fall, and winter are great times as well and there is a ski resort during the snowy weather.

Winter Park Colorado

Winter Park Colorado is a snow lover's paradise. As of February 2009, there is a 75" snow base that will last well into spring so the skiiing is great! Come on up!

Located downtown, right next to our visitor's center, is a wonderful place for families to come and enjoy the snow called Hideaway Park. They offer FREE fun events for the whole family in the snow. There is free sledding and many other things to do, including classes to learn how to snowshoe. How fun is that?

Of course, there are plenty of mountains for skiing in Winter Park Colorado. If you do not want to drive up the mountains, how about taking the Ski Train instead? The Ski Train serves breakfast, has  big screen TVs, reclining seats, and will drop you off right by your ski lift. It sure beats driving.

Reservations for the ski train in winter and in summer are recommended. So make reservations to coincide with your ski trip and have a blast all the way. In summer, you can tour the countryside in this incredible train and not worry about the heat.

Yes, even though this town's name is Winter, there are many great summer things to do when the snow melts. Biking, hiking, train rides, the river, and so much beauty awaits you when there is no snow. The whole family will love being out in nature among the wildflowers, trees, and local wildlife.

All of Colorado has spectacular scenery so be sure and bring a camera. Remember good walking shoes or very warm socks and boots, depending on the time of year you visit, and lots of sunscreen.

Giuseppes Old Depot Restaurant

Giuseppes Old Depot Restaurant is in the old train depot built back in 1887. Eating here is a delicious lesson in history. The last passenger train going through Colorado Springs stopped in 1971. The train depot has been restored and turned into a fun place to eat that kids will love. Freight trains whiz by throughout the day.

Spaghetti, stone-baked pizza, vegetarian spinach lasagne, and spicy sausage and ground beef lasagne are their specialties. Your children will love the spaghetti and pizza. They are wonderful. I love Italian food so I am prejudiced. You can also get grilled ribs, grilled salmon, prime rib, and down home fried chicken. They are all really good. Giuseppe's makes a secret barbecue sauce that is out of this world.

The desserts are delectable. They are a little on the pricey side, but quite good. You may not have room if you eat a big plate of spaghetti so you should consider going there for a snack and having the dessert then or order it to go. May I suggest one of their delicious cheesecakes or the tiramisu? You can't go wrong with either of these choices. For the chocolate lover in your family, try the Chocolate Challenge--a triple chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling. This dessert is big enough to serve two to three people. Delicioso!

Giuseppes Old Depot Restaurant has a big variety of dining rooms, each with a different train station atmosphere.

They are open Fridays and Saturdays from 11am until 10pm and Sundays through Thursdays from 11am until 9pm. Their address is 10 S. Sierra Madre Street and you can call them at (719)635-3111 to make reservations or to order take-out.

Pizzas cost between $10 and $20. The other meals cost between $7 and $30 per person.

Garden Of The Gods

Chances are, you have never seen anything like Garden Of The Gods in Colorado Springs! This is an incredible place with unbelievable sandstone formations.

Below, my husband and son under The Balancing Rock, a natural and totally amazing formation at Garden of the Gods. Can you believe this?

Make sure you bring your camera. Your friends will never believe you as you try to explain what you saw here.

Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs
from instacam.com

A little background information: In 1879, a man named Charles Elliott Perkins, who happened to be the head of the Burlington Railroad, bought this property and did not do any type of development to the land. He died in 1907 and left the property to his heirs. They decided to give the property to the city of Colorado Springs if it was preserved as a park and opened to the public.
Fortunately for all of us, this is what the city agreed to and it is now registered as a national landmark.

Garden of the Gods is a 1,300 acre rock garden. When I say "rock," I don't mean rocks the size of your hand or your head. I mean giant sculptures made by God using wind and rain over millions of years.

They identified a new dinosaur here in May of 2008, Theiophytalia kerri. How exciting is that!

Below, a photo of one of the huge formations at Garden of the Gods with my husband and son on the road to give you some perspective of how large and awesome these rocks are!

There are no words to adequately describe this rock wonderland. When my in-laws came up to Colorado Springs for my husband's graduation, they could not believe how beautiful this place is. All through school, some of my husband's fellow students would spend hours in this park studying. If we had not had three small children, we may have done the same thing...

Admission to the park is free. Can you believe it? But, there is an optional 20 minute bus tour of the park for $5 for adults and $2.50 for kids up through the age of 12.

There is also an optional 12 minute movie that costs $2 for adults and $1 for children, ages 5 to 12. It is called "How Did Those Red Rocks Get There?" By taking the tour and/or watching the movie, you are supporting the upkeep of the park.

There is a visitor information center where park officials will answer your questions. Here you will find restrooms and a cafeteria.

In the summer, park officials give free 45 minute walks, talking about the sandstone formations and the wildlife here. There are walking trails so you can get your exercise for the day. You can also drive through the park as the rock formations are spread out.

You can bring your dog on a leash as long as you clean up after him/her. The walking trails are mostly easy, some moderate. There are also some mountain biking trails and some horseback riding trails.

Technical rock climbers have to register at the Visitor Center.

To get there, take exit 146 from I-25. Take Garden of the Gods Road west and then go south on 30th Street.

The Flying W Ranch

The Flying W Ranch is a real working cattle ranch in Colorado Springs, near Garden of the Gods. From Memorial Day weekend through the end of August, you can eat a chuckwagon dinner and then watch a show every evening. Yum and Yeeehaaaa!

This is a great place and one you should not miss if you have not visited a real working ranch before. The food is excellent and the shows are a lot of fun.

There is a western village for you to tour with shops and native Americans making craft work for you to purchase. Kids can ride the train around the ranch. See a horse get a new shoe put on.

Steaks, pork ribs, brisket, or barbecued chicken are served outside along with buttermilk biscuits, beans, baked potatoes, and salad on good weather nights. If there is rain, there is an indoor place so you can still enjoy the food.

For the month of September, you can catch the dinner and show from Thursday through Saturday each week. From March until Memorial Day weekend, and from October through December, they are open on weekends for dinner only. They are closed for all of January and February.

The Flying W Ranch has been serving locals and visitors since 1953. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (719) 598-4000 or (800)232-3599. In order to make reservations, you must provide a name, a credit card number and a telephone number. Trust me, the whole experience is worth it!

Arrive at 5pm so you have time to tour the village and have a look around. Dinner is served at 7pm. The show starts at 8pm. Some evenings, they serve 1,000 people so the earlier you get there, the better!

If you are interested in getting married cowboy style, there is a beautiful old western church just for weddings. There is also an outdoor area where you can get married.

Below are the current (2009) admission prices for dinner and the show.

Edelweiss Restaurant

The Edelweiss Restaurant is a family-friendly place to eat that kids enjoy. This is a great German eatery that has been in business for 40 years. The dining room has a real European atmosphere. It is a fun place to eat in.

It is open from Sunday through Thursday from 11:30am to 9pm and on Friday and Saturday from 11:30am to 9:30pm.

All of the desserts are made from scratch by a European-trained chef. Every dessert is incredibly delicious and I could eat them all.

The lunch and dinner menus have a nice selection of salads, sandwiches, and German food plates. I have eaten a good deal of them and this place has good food. The price are not cheap, but are moderately rated. There are a few items for children. Our kids loved them and my guess is that yours will, too.

You can get a good lunch for under $10. Dinners cost anywhere from around $12 up to $26 per person, not including drinks or desserts. There is a good selection of dishes to choose from.

This restaurant is located at 34 East Ramona Avenue and the phone number is (719) 633-2220.

The Dutch Kitchen

The Dutch Kitchen, in Manitou Springs is an inexpensive, but wonderful place to get delicious soups, sandwiches, and pies. Don't leave Colorado Springs until you have eaten here! With a homey atmosphere, you will enjoy looking on the walls at the many pie awards they have won over the years. After you taste one of their pies, you will understand why.

This eatery has been serving up good food since 1959 and the food is still delicious and satisfying. My favorite is the corned beef sandwich. Their specialty is a Reuben sandwich. They also serve up a great Monte Cristo, my daughter's favorite. They make their own fresh salad dressings and serve sandwiches on freshly baked bread.

The buttermilk pie is really good. In the summer, the fresh rhubarb pie is excellent, if you like rhubarb. It is not sour; just the right amount of sugar and the crust is fantastic. When I was a kid in upstate New York, we grew rhubarb in our garden and made rhubarb pies all of the time so it took me right back to my childhood! Yum!

Unfortunately, this restaurant is closed every in the spring and fall. They are closed everyday during December, January, and February. Sorry, winter visitors, but you will have to come back in the spring...

The other disadvantage is that they do not accept credit cards. So make sure that you have plenty of cash, not that you need a lot. Not including drinks or dessert, you can expect to pay between $4 and $8 for lunch and between $7 and $13 per person for dinner. It is worth it.

The Dutch Kitchen is located at 1025 Manitou Avenue and their phone number is 719-685-9962. They are open from 11:30am to 3:30pm and from 4:30pm to 8pm.

Cripple Creek Attractions

Cripple Creek attractions include casinos, a railroad, the Butte Theater, a mine tour, and hiking and biking on an old gold trail, plus other things.

Back in the 1890s, this town was built to attract and keep gold miners. Casinos are still prevalent and many visitors who are vacationing in Colorado Springs take day trips out there to try their luck, instead of going to Las Vegas.

The town has a lot of museums for you to visit. You can drive through an old gold camp to another town called Victor and there you can tour old ghost towns and gold mines so you can see what life was like back in the 1890s.

The Mollie Kathleen Mine Tour is a great journey back in time. You will go into a real gold mine and travel down a mine shaft.

Go to a live play at the Butte Theater while you enjoy snacks and drinks in the audience.

Hike or ride a bike down the Trails of Gold through historic gold mining areas.

In June each year, the town has Donkey Derby Days. For 2009, the dates are June 27-29. There is a wild herd of donkeys that roam the hills of of the town. So each year to celebrate them, there is a donkey parade, activities, and music for visitors to enjoy.

For the 4th of July, there is a big party complete with fireworks that starts early in the morning and lasts on through the big fireworks show.

There are some nice hotels for you to stay in if you want to make your visit longer than a day trip from Colorado Springs. There are also many good places to eat in this little town.

There are many local stores and shops for you to buy souvenirs, clothing, and antiques.

Colorado Springs Weather

The Colorado Springs weather is mild all year long. In the summer, the average high is usually 84 degrees or less. It is warm enough to go swimming, but never so hot that you feel uncomfortable, like in Texas.

In the photo above, my daughter and I are enjoying a beautiful spring day in the Springs at Garden of the Gods.

In the spring, the flowers push themselves out of the ground in time for Easter and the grass, once again, turns a vibrant green. There is a lot of rain because it is so green.

Air conditioning is not necessary for most of the summer days and it is always pleasant to be outdoors in the summer, (except for when there are thunderstorms) because the humidity is low. This is due to the high altitude of 6,035 feet. There are a lot of thunderstorms during the summer months, so you do need to be prepared for them. At the very least, carry umbrellas and/or rain jackets with you.

At this altitude, the oxygen level is only about two thirds of what it is at sea level. If you have a hard time breathing, you may want to take that into consideration. Some people do have a hard time acclimating to Colorado Springs if they already have breathing or heart problems.

There is always a breeze. We lived in Colorado Springs for four years and never did we experience a day without a breeze. Some days, the breeze turns into a hard wind. With three small children and a puppy, I spent a lot of time outside and the air is never still. That is one reason why the temperature never feels uncomfortably hot.

What used to crack us up is the TV show, "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman." Don't get me wrong. We love that show. We lived in Colorado Springs while the show originally aired and we got such a kick out of it each Saturday night.

The part that made my husband and me laugh so much was Grace's outdoor cafe. She was always cooking right outside and always serving the food out there on tables to the townspeople. Ha ha ha.  The tablecloths always stayed put on the tables and no one's hair ever blew out of place.

In real life, we had a hard time having little picnics outside in our backyard because the wind was always blowing, yet the TV program never showed the gentlest breeze. The breezes could sometimes get quite violent and other times, they were mild, but the air is never still there.

In the winter, the lows sometimes reach the teens and 20's but the average highs get up to around 42 degrees. This means that when it snows, it normally melts within a day or two and then it starts all over again. There is no snow buildup like up in Denver.

You definitely need a winter coat, warm socks, boots, and gloves so if you visit in the winter, be sure that you have these items. It does snow often; the snow just doesn't stick around for long.

Colorado Springs weather allows you to experience all four seasons. Fall is especially dramatic with the turning of the beautiful aspen leaves to gold. They are an incredible sight to see and are a very popular tourist attraction each October.

Because of the mild Colorado Springs weather, summer is the perfect time to visit. When walking around outdoors, there is never an oppressive heat and no uncomfortable humidity so you are free to enjoy the beauty that God created in nature around this incredible city.

In the photo above, even though we are enjoying beautiful, warm Colorado Springs weather in May at Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak still has plenty of glistening snow to look at. Talk about eye candy...every time I felt overwhelmed, I just looked up at that beauty and things fell into proper perspective.

Colorado Springs Vacations

Colorado Springs vacations are perfect for newlyweds and for families with children and teenagers. There is so much to do and experience that everyone will find things they want to do.

Not only is Colorado Springs one of the prettiest places in the country, but it has a ton of outdoor activities for you and your family. You will get your exercise and have fun at the same time.

Bring good walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. If you love to take photos, bring your camera. There is so much to photograph. The natural beauty of Colorado Springs and the surrounding area is incredible.

Colorado Springs vacations are a joy because of the weather. The climate is so mild that it is a pleasure to get out and do things in the spring, summer, and fall. The heat is not too much and the humidity is low. Most of the winter is really not all that bad, either.

If you only have a week in the Springs, don't try to squeeze it all in. Choose a few things and take your time at each one and enjoy the places you visit. Do not rush from one place to another. Relax and enjoy the beauty and the coolness of the air. It is so clean and gorgeous.

I recommend that you try to visit the following places while you are in Colorado Springs as time allows:

Drive up Pikes Peak.

Take the Cog Train up Pikes Peak.

Colorado Springs Tourists

When arriving in the city, Colorado Springs tourists should stop by the Convention and Visitor's Bureau located at 515 S. Cascade Avenue for helpful information about the city of Colorado Springs.

Here, you will find an Official Visitor Guide to Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region, along with many colorful brochures detailing attractions in the Colorado Springs area.

These brochures are very helpful to have. Colorado Springs has so many tourist attractions that you may not be aware of them all.
When you see all of the brochures in the Visitor Center, you will wish you had more vacation time as you will want to go to every attraction! You will be amazed at how many attractions one small city can have. You and your family will have to go through them all and pick and choose what you will have time and money to see during your visit. Save the rest for your next trip to Colorado Springs.

Downtown Colorado Springs

Downtown Colorado Springs

from Instacam.com

The Visitor Center is open seven days a week during the summer months from 8:30am to 5pm. The rest of the year, it is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 5pm. It is worth the trip.

If you have a GPS, it will easily get Colorado Springs tourists to the Visitor Center. If not, pick up a good map of the area, preferably before you travel to Colorado Springs. If you get on I-25, take exit 141, which is Cimarron Street. Go east on Cimarron Street and turn on Cascade Street. Again, the address is 515 S. Cascade Street. Their phone number is (800)888-4748 or (719)635-7506.

It may be helpful to call them before you travel and request that they mail some information to your home so you can plan your vacation to the Springs ahead of time. They have an itinerary planner and let you know about upcoming events.

Colorado Springs Sky Sox

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox is the minor league baseball team in the Springs. They play in the Pacific Coast League. They play baseball at Security Service Field which used to be known as Sky Sox Stadium, like when I was there.
A little history...Originally the team was an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox in the Western League from 1950 through 1958 when the Western League folded. Then there was no pro baseball team in the Pikes Peak region until 1988 after the Hawaiian Islanders moved to the Springs.

Going to a pro baseball game is a ton of fun. They really do play "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" using an organ and the whole audience sings along. The hot dogs really do taste better while you are watching the Sky Sox play. It is so exciting to have thousands of people cheering the guys on when they hit a homerun.

The stadium is first rate and so is the team. Starting in 2004, there have been ongoing renovations, modernizing everything. The Sky Sox have spent $8 million doing this. They have also put in a new picnic area and a banquet hall.

The stadium seats 8,500 screaming fans so there is plenty of room for you to catch a game or two while you are vacationing in Colorado Springs. Don't worry about sitting out in the sticky, miserable summer heat. There is always a cool breeze so you don't feel uncomfortably drenched while watching a Colorado Springs Sky Sox game. Humidity is low because Colorado Springs is in the Rocky Mountains at 6,531 feet above sea level.

So get some tickets and bring money for hot dogs, sodas, peanuts, and your favorite baseball snacks and get ready for a wonderful evening of baseball, singing, and cheering.

Best Colorado Springs Restaurants

This page gives you the best Colorado Springs restaurants to visit while you are on vacation. Of course, there are many chain eateries and fast food places in the Springs, but I always try to eat at original places, food establishments where the local residents go because there is something special about the food and the ambiance.

If you are vacationing with children, sometimes it is just easier to stop at the golden arches of McDonald's and get them a happy meal. That is fine, but while you are on vacation, try to go to at least a few original eateries and enjoy the local food. You will be glad you did. And sometimes the kids will be glad you did, too.

My first review is my favorite place to eat in the Springs, The Mason Jar. You will find the link listed below. Check back often as I will be updating this page as quickly as I can in time for your summer vacation.

Here are some of our favorite places to eat in Colorado Springs. If you have any favorites, please send them in along with a review of the food. Include the name and address of the restaurant and what they did right.

Thank you for contributing your good restaurant experiences in and around Colorado Springs.

Colorado Springs Ghost Town

The Colorado Springs Ghost Town is a step back in time, right in the middle of Colorado Springs.

This museum was built back in 1954. It has all sorts of interesting buildings and pieces to teach guests about how Colorado Springs was back in the 1800's. The Ghost Town Museum is built inside of a stone building that was built back in 1899. The town includes a rooming house, a general store, a barber shop, a livery, a blacksmith shop, a saloon, a jail and a sheriff's office and a shooting range. We took about three hours to tour it and see everything.

There is a sidewalk and some carriages, you know, the horse and buggy kind, but without the horse. There is an old-fashioned phone like you see on Little House On The Prairie in the later years. The general store is filled with the type of merchandise you could buy back then. Really cool stuff and what a great thing to teach your kids up close and personal.

In the summer months, you can pan for gold, just like the prospectors did back in the 1800's. The kids will love it. So this is not only educational and interesting, but a lot of fun.

The Colorado Springs Ghost Town is located at 400 South 21st Street. It is easy to get there. Coming from I-25, take Exit 141 and go west on Highway 24 for 1.5 miles. Turn left on 21st Street and take an immediate right into the Van Briggle Pottery/Ghost Town entrance.

Admission is $6.50 for adults and $4 for children, ages 6 through 16. Kids under 6 get in free. From June through August, it is open from 9am to 6pm, Monday through Saturday and on Sundays, it is open from 11am to 6pm. For the rest of the year, it is open from 10am to 5pm from Monday through Saturday and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays.

Colorado Springs Fitness

Colorado Springs fitness is a great for 2009. According to Men's Fitness magazine, Colorado Springs is the second fittest city in the United States this year! They were beat out only by Salt Lake City, Utah.

The population is 380,000? and only 19% are obese. The national average is 25.19%. Why? It seems that the folks living in Colorado Springs get a lot more exercise than the average person in other cities around the country. And why is that?

Well, number one is the exceptional scenic beauty that its citizens can look at while they are outdoors. Pikes Peak, the other mountains, the beautiful trees, flowers, green grass, and perfect skies are much more desirable to look at than the television set or video games.

There is more time for adults to exercise because the average commute to work and back home is 45% less than other cities. This helps a great deal. There are 210 city parks and that is a lot. Men, women, boys, and girls go outside and play, walk, hike, run, and swim a lot. They love to get out in the wide, open spaces and run and play tag, catch, frisbee, and basketball.

More parks and other wide open spaces equals more exercise which
equals thinner, healthier people. 33% more people here participate in sports than in other cities. Why would anyone want to be cooped up inside when they can be outdoors in such a picturesque place. Just wait until you see this beautiful city up close and personal!

According to Men's Fitness magazine, people living in Colorado Springs are 100% more likely to take a hike than residents of other cities in their study. Wow! 100%! Why? Again, the beauty of God's creation in this spectacular city is the reason. The air is cool, dry, fresh, and clean. You feel comfortable when you are outside having fun. I used to take my three small children out each day to play in the yard, in the park near our home, and in many other places.

Once my oldest son started kindergarten, we walked him to school each morning and walked back over in the afternoon to pick him up on clear days and in snowstorms. There was no school bus because we lived too close to the school, not quite a mile away. I bought a double stroller and put my one year old and my two year old in it and I pushed them all over the city. That gave me even more exercise on my quest for Colorado Springs fitness after giving birth to my daughter there. My two little ones loved the stroller ride.

On snowy days, I bundled them up and covered them with blankets in the stroller. The temperature was never too cold and the snow was never too bad for it. Besides, we only had one car and my husband used it each day to get to work and school so I had
no choice. Turns out, it was great exercise for me.

Springs residents are 77% more likely to bike for fitness. Mountain biking and running, not to mention skiing and
snowshoeing, are very popular here as well.

Usually the weather is so lovely that many people walk to work if they live close enough. When I did work downtown several years later, I would go out and walk during lunch. The sidewalks downtown were always crowded with others on their lunch breaks, walking for their health. Colorado Springs fitness is extremely important to most of its citizens.

Colorado Springs Easter Sunrise Services

Celebrate Easter Sunday early in the morning by attending one of the Colorado Springs Easter Sunrise services. What better way to celebrate this than to go to an early morning service and watch the sun come up. I have been to many sunrise services throughout the years and they are a wonderful way to begin the day.

Thousands of worshippers used to go to Garden of the Gods for Easter services. Since the early 1920's, Easter sunrise services have been held there but since 2003, formal services are no longer held. That has not stopped worshippers from going to Garden of the Gods for the services since then and thousands will arrive in 2009 on Easter morning to hold a service. Many local church groups meet there and hold services. For Easter of 2009, the sun will rise at 6:40am so plan to meet there accordingly.
A planned service will be held at Acacia Park at 6:00am on April 12, 2009. Acacia Park is located at Platte Avenue and Tejon Street. Watch the sun rise while you celebrate Jesus arising from the grave, proving once and for all that he is the Son of God and has power over sin and death. This is a beautiful spot to celebrate Jesus.

Another planned service will be held at Royal Gorge. The service for April 12, 2009 will be from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. on the South Rim of the Scenic Royal Gorge. Can you think of a more perfect spot to worship our risen Lord?

The Executive Director of Loaves and Fishes, Don Farr, a non-profit organization sponsored by the Canon City Ministerial Alliance will speak. Worship music will be provided by Larry Kettle, from the Bridge to Life Church of Canon City.

If I can find some information on more Colorado Springs Easter Sunrise services, I will post them on here. Most churches have Easter services at the regular time if you are not a very early morning person.

Happy Easter! He is risen! He is risen indeed! Hallelujah!

Colorado Springs Balloon Classic

Every September, the Colorado Springs Balloon Classic is held at Memorial Park. Watching tons of gorgeous hot air balloons take off early in the morning and throughout the weekend is a spectacular sight.

After the balloons launch, they float through the city of Colorado Springs, past Pikes Peak, high in the air. From our home in Colorado Springs, we used to watch them float in front of Pikes Peak every September during the Labor Day weekend. They are so beautiful to watch, and even more so up close and personal.

Early one Saturday morning, our family drove over to Memorial Park around 6 am (no easy feat with three small children under five!) to see the balloons by the lake. We were excited, fascinated, and pretty thrilled as we watched the balloons fill with air, fire up, and ascend with people in them! The only thing cooler would have been if we had gotten to go up in the balloons ourselves.

We got to talk to some of the owners of the balloons as they were unfolding them and getting them ready to fill. Most of them go to various balloon festivals around the country, such as the one they have in Albuquerque.

The variety of balloons is amazing. We saw a lot of colorful rounded ones like the kind you normally see when you think of hot air balloons. We also saw some unusually shaped balloons at the Colorado Springs Balloon Classic, like Tyrannosaurus Rex, pictured above.

Our kids were excited to see dinosaurs, Spiderman, Tony the Tiger, cowboys, and various animals go up, up, up in the air early in the morning chill.

You might be surprised to know that Memorial Park was very crowded that early in the morning with hundreds of spectators. The crowd grows as the sun comes up. All through the day for the entire Labor Day weekend, the balloons lazily float across Pikes Peak.

If you are in Colorado Springs during the Labor Day weekend, be sure to visit Memorial Park early in the morning and watch the incredible balloons blow up and seem to come to life!

Colorado Springs Airport

If you would like to save time, fly in to the Colorado Springs Airport instead of driving on your trip.

While we lived there, Colorado Springs built a beautiful new airport right near our home. When my husband's parents flew in for his graduation from Bible College, we got to go over and pick them up at the brand new Colorado Springs Airport. Very classy!

You can fly to Colorado Springs on United, Frontier, Skywest, Northwest, United, US Airways, Continental, or Delta Airlines. But not American Airlines or Southwest.

I suggest that you go online and look for deals through an online travel agency like Expedia or Travelocity. But sometimes, the airlines themselves can give you a good deal so you may want to check online with the actual airlines as well. Also, you can book reservations to rent a car and pick it up at the airport online. Hotel reservations, too, can be booked online.

Right now, with the economy in a slump, you can find some good deals. Usually a Saturday night stay at your destination makes the trip cheaper.

I used to book flights for American Airlines and a Saturday night stay would always make the flight less expensive. Of course, it all depends on how many others have booked your particular flight as well.

Before we moved to Colorado Springs, we used to drive from El Paso and believe me, it is way better to fly here than to drive, especially with small children! I love the idea that I can sit down, buckle up, and leave the driving to the pilot and in just a matter of a few hours, I can be at my destination.

The airport is not far from some major roads through Colorado Springs and you can go to a car rental counter at the airport and then conveniently pick up your vehicle there.

You should probably maximize your time and fly to Colorado Springs if you:

1. Don't have too much time to spend here.

2. Hate to drive across country.

3. Have a baby or young children who find it difficult to sit still for long amounts of time.

4. Are traveling with a senior citizen.

5. Are on your honeymoon.

Have a great flight in to the Colorado Springs Airport!

Colorado Rafting Through Royal Gorge

How about a Colorado rafting trip down the Arkansas River through Royal Gorge? If whitewater rafting is something you would like to do, the Royal Gorge is the place to do it!

The Arkansas River is just 25 feet wide through the gorge so it has some pretty good rapids. There are huge waves and big drops through this portion of the Arkansas River. The whitewater here is ranked from Class III to Class IV. The cliffs here are 1100 feet high and just spectacular to look at from the river.
A company called Raft Masters will take you on the trip of a lifetime. Up to seven guests can go in a raft plus one of the guides from Raft Masters. You can take a half day trip or a full day trip. There are also overnight trips. Raft Masters provides all meals on any of their trips.

They provide wetsuits for you to wear free of charge so that you are comfortable. You need to wear some good, yet comfortable shoes. Bare feet are not allowed. No flip flops or Croc-type shoes can be worn while you raft.

You will want to bring sunscreen. If you wear eyeglasses, make sure you have a strap on them or you will lose them to the Arkansas River.

Whether you have been whitewater rafting before or not, you can ride the rapids and have a blast. Nothing is 100% safe, but if you cooperate and follow the rules, you should be fine. The most important thing you can to stay safe is to listen to your guide and you will have a successful trip, the adventure of a lifetime!

Talk about fun. These adventures are awesome. My kids want to go whitewater rafting again and again!

The price for a half day, 12 mile trip is currently $64 per person. A full day, 22 mile trip costs $99. They also offer other routes and options so it is best for you to visit their web site using the link above. This is Colorado rafting at its best.

Along with Raft Masters, there are other companies who offer whitewater rafting in Colorado Springs. For instance, there is:

WAORafting

Buffalo Joe

Performance Tours

American Adventure Expedition

River Runners

There are also many other Colorado rafting tours you can take through the state besides the Royal Gorge tour.

Cog Railway Up Pikes Peak

A fabulous way to see Pikes Peak is to travel up the mountain by Cog Railway. Sit back, enjoy the incredible beauty and let the train take you up to the summit. It is so much fun.

It takes the train 75 minutes to go nine miles one way up to the summit at 14,110 feet. Of course, once you reach the summit, you will want to get off the train and look around at the view and the beauty on the mountain. Take plenty of photos.

When you are chilly, go into the restaurant and get something to eat and something hot to drink because, trust me, it is really cold up there.

Do not forget your jacket! Wear good walking shoes or comfortable sneakers and warm socks. One more thing, take your camera. The views are amazing.

Stop in the gift shop and pick up some souvenirs. Then go out and enjoy the view once more. Wait for your train and begin the 75 minute trip back down the mountain.

If you are like me, you will want to go up again the next day, this time by car.

Rates vary depending on the time of year.

Rates are as high as $33.50 for adults and $18.50 for children through age 12. If you hold your two year old or younger child on your lap for the entire trip, he/she rides free. A bit of advice here. 75 minutes is a long time to hold a squirmy little one on your lap one way. Be smart and buy the ticket for your little one. You will have more room to stretch out and you will have a more enjoyable time.

The Cog Railway is a wonderful way to enjoy beautiful scenic Pikes Peak. I urge you not to miss it when you visit Colorado Springs.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

One of the first places we visited in Colorado Springs was the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. It was started in 1926. Below is the Giraffe Cam at the zoo.

 from CMZoo.org

Images update every minute. Click your browser's refresh button to display the current image.

This is just a few miles up the road from the Broadmoor if you happen to be staying there. It is a beautiful drive up the mountain and the zoo is one of the nicest I have been to in the United States.
My biggest memory of this zoo is the exhibit of giraffes. In the photo above, my son, Andrew, poses by some of the giraffes. I have always loved giraffes and at this zoo, you can buy crackers and actually feed the giraffes. They lean right over the fence where you are and take the crackers out of your hand with their huge black tongues. They are fascinating creatures up close and personal and are so much fun to feed.

Your kids will either be extremely excited or screaming in terror. Mine were thrilled to pieces to see the giraffes that close and to feed the crackers to the giraffes. They laughed at those long black tongues sucking up the crackers. Other kids were so afraid that they just screamed. We thought that was pretty funny.

Be sure that you wear good walking shoes like sneakers or tennis shoes and thick socks. There is a lot of walking uphill. You get a good workout, especially if you are pushing a stroller with two babies in it, like I did on one visit. (My two youngest are a year apart.) Plus I had to keep running after a four year old!

This was one of the most enjoyable places we have ever gone. The kids had a great time all over that zoo. The monkeys and the elephants are always enjoyable. There are even penguins.

There is a kiddie playground and an area where kids can touch the animals. This zoo is big and spacious with over 650 different species of animals. Lots of the animals are in man-made realistic looking nature habitats. Others are in cages.

There is a tram you can ride to tour the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for an extra fee.

Take a stroller or plan to rent one there for the little ones because they will get tired. Bring a camera, hats, and sunscreen because you will be in the sunlight most of the day. It will be nice and cool up on the mountain, but you still will want to protect the little ones from the sun's rays.

Tickets are currently (December 2008) $12 for adults and $6 for kids, ages 3 to 11.

Cave Of The Winds

Cave of the Winds in Manitou Springs was discovered back in the 1880's by two brothers, George and John Pickett, who were out with a group from their church.

If you have never explored a cave, don't miss this one. It is a beautiful underground chamber of beauty, with stalactites, stalagmites, canopies made of limestone, and crystal formations.

Wear jeans, good sneakers, and a light jacket as you might get cool. The temperature stays at 54 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure your children have jackets.

Take a camera as you will definitely want to have photos of this cave to enjoy after your vacation. Your whole family will be amazed at the beauty that God created underground. The formations are just gorgeous.

This cave, just like many others, is home to a lot of bats, but don't worry. They do not attack you. If this is your first cave exploration, the strange smell you experience as you enter the cave is bat guano, aka bat poop. Yuck, but it is there in almost every cave I have ever been in.

Admission is $14 for adults and $7 for children ages 6 to 11. They are open everyday of the year, except for Christmas. Hours vary.

Build Your Own Business

SBI! eLearning

There is so much to do in Colorado that it may inspire you to build your own business online to tell everyone else about what you love to do in Colorado, any anywhere else, for that matter!

If you are not computer or internet-savvy, don't worry. I am not, either. I use a company called Site Build It, also known as SBI to build my sites. They make it simple to build a web site that works and earns you money.

Now, it is even easier because SBI is offering an online course you can take in the comfort of your own home to learn how to build a successful web site. This means that you do not have drive in the snow over treacherous mountain roads to get to class at a college or university. You just log on in your toasty-warm home and learn, while the snow gently falls outside.

This 12-week course starts by teaching you basic online business practices that so many web site builders do not understand. This will help your site to be found. What good is a beautifully-built  site if no one finds it?

You will learn how to pick a great topic to write about, how to build a web page, and how to earn money from your web site. The process really works! I know because I earn money each month from my web sites.

No, this is not a Get-Rich-Quick scheme, but you can make real money from your web site! Who does not need extra money these days? My earnings have been increasing each month. Now, I earn enough to cover all of my monthly utilities, the household insurance, cable TV and high-speed internet, and I am saving for our vacation to Colorado this summer. Without my web site income, it would not be in our budget.

If I can do it, you can build your own business using E-Learning through SBI! Look into it today and start earning extra cash so you can plan your next vacation.

Broadmoor Hotel Colorado Springs

The best place to stay for your vacation is the Broadmoor Hotel Colorado Springs. It is a beautiful place, but definitely not cheap.

This very old resort was built back in 1918 at the base of Cheyenne Mountain. It is made up of several Mediterranean-style buildings painted pink on 3,000 luxuriously manicured acres.

When you step inside the original building, you will think you are in a fabulous art museum. There are original paintings by Toulouse Lautrec hanging there. The most incredible marble staircase and Italian tiles adorn it, not to mention beautiful chandeliers. Ming dynasty ceramic pieces are also on display there.

Cheyenne Lake is right behind the main building. A pool is right next to the lake so it looks like a seaside resort. There is an outdoor lap pool for those who enjoy working out in the pool. There are waterslides, two outside hot tubs and 13 cabanas. There is also an outdoor cafe so you can enjoy the cool breezes year round.

Just in case you visit when it is not so warm outside, there is an indoor pool as well.

This luxury hotel has 700 rooms. Each large room holds either one king sized bed or two double beds and are decorated European-style with beautiful wooden furniture, chandeliers, and art pieces. The rooms are in a series of buildings around the lake. Wireless internet access and cable TV are in every room.

Of course, the rooms include air conditioning, desks, a coffee maker, a mini bar, an iron, a hair dryer, phones, and a safe. Valet laundry is provided for your convenience.

There are 12 restaurants on the premises and 24 hour room service.

If you love golf, there are three different 18 hole golf courses to enjoy. There are nine tennis courts. A state-of-the-art fitness center is there for your convenience. There is a spa and in-room massage therapy if you prefer. Aerobics classes are given for guests. The lake has paddleboats. Bikes can be rented.

A shopping arcade is also conveniently located on the premises, not to mention a movie theater. You never have to leave.

In the summer, there is a children's program designed for them so you can enjoy some of the adult activities listed above.

Riding stables are also on the property. Flyfishing classes can be attended so you can take full advantage of the beautiful lake.

A double room at the Broadmoor Hotel Colorado Springs starts at $350 and a large suite can cost up to $3500 for one night. There are many prices in between, depending on the unit you want and the time of year that you book. The service is really incredible. There are very few complaints about it.

About This Site

Let me tell you a bit about this site and why I chose to build it.

My family and I lived in Colorado Springs for four years. We really enjoyed the beauty of living in the Rocky Mountains and were sad when it was time to leave to go into fulltime ministry. Frankly, I wish we had stayed there. But we traveled all over the country. Colorado Springs is one of the best places we have lived and I would like to go back to live permanently. It is that pretty.

I am building this site (and my other sites) using a company called Site Build It or SBI for short.

If you are like a lot of people who surf the web, you have heard of SBI! There is a lot of internet buzz about it and I have to tell you that I have been using them to build my sites for almost three years now. The positive buzz is true.

Perhaps you have been thinking about trying Site Build It.
If you have, I can tell you that you really can make money online. I do. No, I have not gotten rich and it takes time, but it is doable in your spare time. The good thing is that the amount of income grows over time.

You can buy one site anytime for $299 for one year and this is a great bargain considering all that you get for your money.

But, SBI! runs specials all throughout the year. You can buy one for $299 and buy a second one, for you or as a gift for a friend or family member for just $100 more. These specials usually happen around Valentine's Day, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day, and Halloween.

The absolute best time of the year to buy Site Build It! is about halfway through December until New Year's Day when Ken Evoy offers his Holiday Special where you can buy-one-site and get-one-free. It ends up being about $150 per site.

That is a super bargain.

But what will I do with two sites, you ask?

You can buy one for now and build the second one later. Most people making a full-time living online have more than one site. You can start building one and wait up to nine months to start the second site.

Or you can...

Buy one for yourself and give the second one as a gift to a friend or a family member. Do you know anyone who would like to quit their day job or who needs extra money? Perhaps your husband, wife, son, daughter, mom, dad, friend, business associate, or anyone who is considering an online business that has the power to "change a life".

And the best part is Ken guarantees your success. He'll give you your money back if you decide you can't do it (actually for any reason.)
What have you got to lose?

If you do miss the Buy One, Get One Free Special, $299 for one SBI site is still a great value to start with. And, you can always catch a Buy One, Get One for $100 More Special throughout the year. The important thing is that you start sharing what you know with people and earn money. Begin to build your financial independence like I am doing.

Books About Colorado

This page has some books about Colorado and Colorado Springs that you can buy on Amazon. You can also find some of them in your local bookstore, but Amazon's prices are much cheaper. I used to buy all of my books at Barnes and Noble and some of the other bookstores, but I spent way too much money, not realizing how much Amazon could save me.

Colorado Springs books are helpful as you plan for your vacation to the beautiful city of Colorado Springs. Books about the whole state of Colorado are also helpful, along with this web site.

So browse through the carousels of books that I handpicked for you and consider buying the ones that look interesting to you.

This is the first set about Colorado Springs.

This set is also about Colorado Springs.
